In a matter of seconds, Octopus packaging machines from Haloila wrap pallets in plastic film. SEW-EURODRIVE’s technique has played a significant role in the fact that thousands of these pallet wrappers have been sold in more than 100 countries since 1983. The Finnish company Haloila has been synonymous with innovative research and development for over 40 years. Haloila is a member of the “Signode Industrial Group,” one of the world’s largest suppliers of packaging, consumables, machines, and devices in the industrial packaging sector.
At the start of our collaboration, Haloila primarily used our motors and decentralized variable-frequency drives. Today, a comprehensive, decentralized automation solution from our modular design handles the complete open-loop control of the Octopus machines. Optimally coordinated components are essential for successful process automation. In the case of the Octopus machines, this is the SEW-EURODRIVE controller with MultiMotion, which handles motion control, machine logic, and control of the entire machine. The DRC.. electronic motor also comes from our modular design.
With these modular components and the supply of hardware and software from a single source, startup within a few hours becomes a reality, as does simpler operation of the machines. This enables Haloila to respond even more quickly to individual customer requests. In addition, thanks to a modified frame structure—all motors are now mounted close to the floor—the Octopus machines can produce reliably and can be maintained quickly and easily with just a few simple steps.
The MultiMotion open-loop control system also enables connection to any standard process control system worldwide thanks to open interfaces such as PROFINET, Ethernet IP, Modbus TCP, or Ethernet TCP/IP. Furthermore, energy and manufacturing costs have been reduced through the optimized automation of the packaging machines—all while significantly improving process sequences.
Haloila has found a reliable and competent partner, supplier, and service provider in SEW-EURODRIVE—a true win-win situation for both companies.
Customer Requirements
The requirements were quick startup and easy operation of the machines to enable the rapid and customized fulfillment of customer requests. Additionally, high process stability and, consequently, good maintainability of the Octopus system were required. And, of course, the machines must be equipped for worldwide use.
Our Solution
Modular components and system solutions from a single source ensure quick and easy startup. A modified design, in which all motors are mounted close to the floor, makes maintenance even easier. And thanks to open interfaces, integration with any standard process control system worldwide is possible.
Thanks to these technologies, we were able to create a completely new kind of customer experience—easy operation and new features that improve packaging quality, reduce energy costs, and increase capacity.Jyri Lehtiö, Sales Manager at Haloila
